Well Zelda fans, it should come as no surprise but Tears of the Kingdom is doing phenomenal. Nintendo’s latest entry in the Zelda series is breaking records left and right. In just two months’ time, Tears of the Kingdom has already sold more than half of Breath of the Wild‘s total sales according to official Nintendo sources.
Here is a comparison: Since its release in 2017 Breath of the Wild has sold more than 30 million units worldwide. Tears of the Kingdom hasn’t even been out for six months and it’s already sold 18.5 million units. If this success keeps up, it will no doubt outsell its predecessor in a year’s time. Who knows what it will do in the next six years.

Breath of the Wild is considered one of the best Zeldas of all time, let alone one of the greatest games ever made. It has won multiple awards such as Game of the Year for 2017. It brought in many fans of different gaming genres with its innovation and design. Nintendo took a chance with changing up the standard Zelda formula and it paid off. This new open world “go where you want, when you want” style allowed for players to enjoy the game in any way they chose. Some liked to explore, others liked to fight, and some just tried to use the physics engine to their advantage and fly across the map. Whether you were a hardcore or casual gamer, Breath of the Wild had something for you to enjoy.
Tears of the Kingdom has embodied everything that made Breath of the Wild amazing and taken it even further. The map is larger, the quests are more involved and exciting, the gameplay is more polished, and the crafting brings about some of the most impressive builds you will ever see in a game. The physics engine alone has left other developers scratching their heads at how Nintendo pulled something like this off within the span of only six years. Some have even gone to suggest that Breath of the Wild was a “tech demo” of sorts for Tears of the Kingdom and that this game is what Nintendo initially envisioned for Zelda, much more than a game simply inspired by a handful of unused “DLC ideas.”
Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain, Tears of the Kingdom is doing beyond amazing and will most likely continue to sell exponentially. Nintendo knocked it out of the park with this game and the future looks bright. We haven’t even received a hint of any potential DLC for Tears of the Kingdom yet but it’s safe to bet that if we do, it will only bolster sales even further. Mr. Aonuma and the Zelda team have done the impossible once again and I for one am truly grateful. As a longtime Zelda fan, this beautiful world of Hyrule that they have created is a place that I enjoy spending my hours in. Like it was with its predecessor, I doubt I’ll be going anywhere else for a long time.
Now… Where did I leave Epona?
