The successor to the Nintendo Switch, dubbed “Switch 2” by fans, was officially confirmed by Nintendo on Tuesday. According to a tweet written by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, the new system will be officially revealed “within this fiscal year.” This means we can expect an announcement about the console by March 2025. Furukawa also confirmed a Nintendo Direct scheduled for June for Switch titles expected to be released in the latter half of this year. He clarified that information regarding the successor console to the Switch won’t be revealed in the June Nintendo Direct.
The announcement of the Switch 2 has been highly anticipated. At over 140 million lifetime sales, the Switch is Nintendo’s most popular home console. As it was first released in March 2017, the Switch also has the company’s longest console lifetime to date. The popularity mixed with a long timeline without development news has fueled rumors and speculation. Some outlets have reported on rumors of compatibility with previous switch titles, but there has been no official confirmation. Nintendo is known for innovation and experimentation with their consoles, and many fans are looking forward to learning more about Switch 2 in the coming months.
