Birds are very cute animals. They are small and pretty, but they are loud. Like, really loud. Surprising that such volume could come from an animal that’s only a few inches loud. I’ve had a few birds, and my current bird, Baby, is a very good bird. But even good birds scream. Yes, they scream.
Usually, he’s pretty content, and he just likes listening and happily chirping along to whatever sound can be heard. When I talk with my friends and he’s present, he likes to be part of the conversation, making sure we hear him with chirps at full volume. He also likes to sing along with the music I play him, though more at his own pace than actually on time with the melody. His favorite song is “Let’s All Sing Like the Birdies Sing” from the Enchanted Tiki Room ride at Disney (and it’s no mystery why if you know the tune), but he’s no stranger to Zelda music as well. In fact, he likes a lot of it, much more than I expected.
Sometimes, I leave my phone on top of his cage playing my music for him and he happily chirps along to whatever’s currently playing. I usually do this when I work on my computer with my headphones on, so he can have something to listen to without disrupting what I’m doing. This was the case when I found out how he really felt about a certain Zelda song.
I was just wrapping up my work and about to leave the room, so naturally, I would bring my phone along with me. I picked up the phone and turned off the music that was playing, which just so happened to be the “Hyrule Field” theme from Hyrule Warriors. I began to step away, but before I knew it Baby started screaming like crazy! I thought maybe it might be because I took the music away, but there was no real way of knowing what was going on in the mind of a bird, so I took the phone and went to the next room.
I could still hear him screeching from the other side and I never liked the sound of that. Again, I didn’t really know if taking away the music had anything to do with it, but I brought the phone back and continued the song from where it left off. He warily jumped away from the phone as he usually did when I first placed it on the cage roof, but then he hopped back, silent as the night as he listened. I left the room again and nothing but the occasional “happy” chirp.
He really liked that song. Want to know how I definitely know? Because when the next song played, he started screaming again. I had to go back in and play it on loop for him. I originally thought a song with so much rock guitar and brass would be too loud for such a little bird, but I guess he liked Zelda music as much as I did. Or rock. But I’m pretty sure it’s Zelda.
I do play a lot of Zelda music for him though, perhaps in hope that he’ll pick up a melody to tweet along with like some parakeets are known to do. It hasn’t happened yet, but I still know it can calm him and he will still chirp, though never in tune with the melody. Even though I might not fully understand why he likes something, it’s still nice to share something I enjoy with my little birdie.
