Medli’s Melodies: ‘The Minish Cap – Minish Village’ by Super Marcato Bros.

Pixelated graphics remain a common art style in the video game industry and continue to elicit strong feelings of nostalgia. Upon seeing a two-dimensional rendering of a favorite character, gamers can instantly be whisked away to fond childhood memories, such as midnight gaming sessions on a CRT television or long car rides playing Game Boy by the light of street lamps.

The Zelda franchise is no stranger to this art style. With its roots securely fastened to the 8-bit and 16-bit eras of gaming, the Zelda series helped push the boundaries of graphical fidelity for pixelated sprites, and many believe the pinnacle of this advancement is The Minish Cap on the Game Boy Advance. While the art style is undoubtedly some of the best in the series, perhaps the most overlooked aspect of the game is the soundtrack, which is equally whimsical. The “Minish Village Theme” is perhaps the most iconic track, and a talented group of musicians honored the game by composing a unique arrangement that remains faithful to the original.

Meet the Super Marcato Bros. This group features brothers Karl and Will Brueggemann, and each artist shares a passion for composing and playing video game music. While the group’s YouTube channel is filled with a wide variety of video game covers, my favorite video of theirs is still the “Minish Village Theme” from The Minish Cap.

Armed with a bass guitar, two keyboards, and a drum set, the Super Marcato Bros. perform a rendition of “Minish Village Theme” that is faithful to the original while simultaneously leaving enough room for improvisation. The song opens with a strong drum riff that communicates to the listener that this version of the song will have more depth than the original. The two keyboards and bass guitar immediately follow and blend in perfect harmony.

The two minutes that follow the intro are like listening to a jazz band improvise on one of my favorite Zelda songs. Each musician adds his own creative flair to the piece, yet all four instruments remained unified throughout the cover. Each musician effortlessly passes the baton of the spotlight to one another, which makes the improvisations feel natural.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the cover is that the group recorded the song in just one take. This feat speaks volumes to their talent as both artists and friends. If you enjoyed the Super Marcato Bros’ version of the “Minish Village Theme,” be sure to check out their YouTube channel and website. Karl and Will also host a weekly podcast about video game music, which will help you gain an even further appreciation for Zelda music. Enjoy!
