Medli’s Melodies: Nayru’s Song (Alternative Version) by Alex Ryoga

Leitmotifs remain a powerful method for connecting players to video game characters and locations. Upon hearing the first few chords of these familiar themes, fans are immediately swept to other worlds by ardent waves of nostalgia. No other media outlet combines music and narrative with feelings of personal agency quite like a video game world.

The Zelda franchise is no stranger to this phenomenon, and iconic arrangements such as “Zelda’s Lullaby” and the “Hyrule Field Main Theme” are recognized worldwide for their impact on the series. While every Zelda fan has their favorite character and corresponding motif, my choice is perhaps lesser-known across the community. The protagonist who stole my heart with her soothing demeanor and whimsical voice is none other than the songstress from Oracle of Ages, Nayru.

In sharp contrast to Din’s fiery personality in Oracle of Seasons, Naryu emanates a persona of calm, quiet control in the midst of the chaotic world of Labrynna. As such, her leitmotif is hypnotizing and seemingly whisks the player to a place of tranquility. A YouTuber by the name of Alex Rhoda created an alternative version of “Nayru’s Song” that perfectly amplifies the mystique surrounding this curious Zelda character.

Fans of the original game will immediately notice that Alex’s version of the song feels more distant and ethereal. The combination of unique wind instruments and percussion generates a techno-like atmosphere, which ironically feels a natural fit with Nayru’s character arc.

As the intro progresses to the first verse, Alex creates depth by increasing the improvisation and adding stronger undertones to the piece. This creative choice enhanced my sense of Nayru’s otherworldly persona and generated intense feelings of nostalgia for the opening scene of the game. It quite literally felt as though I was sitting in the forest with Ralph and the animals listening to Nayru sing.

I never dreamed that techno and Zelda would be a good combination, but Alex Ryoga selected the perfect soundtrack to compose a truly unique interpretation of “Nayru’s Song.” Alex’s YouTube channel features several more alternative arrangements of classic Zelda themes so be sure to pay him a visit. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!
