Sealed Legend of Zelda cartridge becomes most expensive NES game ever, selling for $870,000

Well, folks, it looks like somebody out there knew how to save up their rupees, as The Legend of Zelda cartridge that was up for auction sold for the insane price of $870,000. It now holds the record as the most expensive NES game ever sold.

Belonging to the second-ever production run of The Legend of Zelda, this sealed cartridge was always destined for greatness. However, even on June 8, when the price hit $115,000, very few could have predicted the impact this game would have by the next day. On June 9, it sold for $870,000. Assuming one rupee is equal to one dollar, the only Link that could even possibly buy this game is Breath of the Wild‘s hero. Well, technically, Tingle could buy it in either one of his games, but it’s scary to think of Tingle being that rich, so let’s not go there.

Before this copy was sold for its high price, the title of the most expensive game was held by Super Mario Bros. at $660,000. But in this case, Super Mario Bros. was beaten out by its little brother by a wide margin.
