Lace up your Hover Boots because we are going back to the past! According to video game preservation group Gaming Alexandria, before it was turned into a side-scrolling platformer, the Japan-only Back to the Future II was supposed to be a Zelda-style RPG for the SNES.

We don’t get much from the Famitsu magazine scan, just a few screenshots with the title screen and character sprites. There is a lot we don’t know about it, though one can assume that time travel would have been featured heavily and the beloved Pegasus Boots would be replaced with Marty’s signature hoverboard. We can only hope there was a rhythm-based “Johnny B. Goode” level.
It’s hard to say if this version would have been localized. Given the popularity of the franchise and the Zelda-like elements, the likelihood is pretty high. Alas, gamers have to settle for Chrono Trigger or Earthbound for their time-traveling RPG needs.
