By the end of Breath of the Wild, it can feel like Link is pretty much invincible depending on how many shrines he’s completed. The hitch in your breath that Bokoblins and Moblins inspire when you only had a few hearts is now gone, as is the downright terror that the Guardian Stalkers inspire when their piano theme starts to play. In all of Hyrule, Link is the apex predator. At least, until he arrives on Eventide Island.
You can get to Eventide the old-fashioned way using a Korok Leaf and a raft, or if you have the stamina (and the stomach for it), you can take a short flight from the Muwo Jeem Shrine. As you approach the island, nothing seems amiss. It’s just an island. It’s not until you land and hear the deep, familiar voice of a Sheikah monk that you realize the trap that you’ve stumbled your way into as all of your belongings are stripped away. You are no longer the hunter. On Eventide Island, you are the hunted.

As I made my way around Toronbo Shores, I found myself attacked by two Keese. Even these lowly creatures were a threat, but a familiar twinkling on the ground alerted me to a tree branch. As the flying rodents raced towards me, their teeth barred, I raced towards the tree branch, quickly grasping it and smiting down these simple creatures-turned-deadly-threats.
From there, I decided to head north and found an ax stuck in a tree stump, I figured it was a worthy substitute for my tree branch, so I stood on the makeshift wooden platform to grab it. At least, I thought I was on the tree stump, but Link’s slowly shortening stature told me that I better get out of the bog and grab that ax.

With my newfound weapon in hand, I made my way inland a little more and saw a few Bokoblins who had made a base using some wooden platforms surrounding a tree. Emboldened by my newfound weapon, I rushed the first Bokoblin I saw and made quick work of him and his pals. Knowing that I needed supplies, I started to destroy the nearby barrels and crates only to be unpleasantly surprised when an Electric Chuchu popped out and shocked the hatchet right out of my hand. As it bounced after me, it’s bulbous eyes taunting me, I ran away before circling back around, grabbing my ax and throwing it right into the slimy face of my pursuer, causing both weapon and enemy to shatter. Finally alone, I grabbed a Ancient Orb and made my way back through the jungle to a pedestal. A few minutes of Cryonis hijinks later, and I’d placed this orb on its pedestal.
Armed with only my trusty tree branch, I continued my way along the sandy shores only to encounter a camp of Bokoblins. Oh, how I longed for the days when I had nothing to fear from these lovable, bumbling bokos. The metal crates looked like a suitable weapon, and I soon found myself swinging it around mindlessly. Unfortunately for me, a Bokoblin had an even better idea when it picked up an explosive barrel and sent it flying right into my face. Recovering from the blast and dusting off the soot, I found that my porcine attacker had managed to damage some of his friends as well, so I grabbed a nearby weapon and quickly ended the life of my explosive-happy enemy.

After chowing down on the seared steak left behind by my porcine pals, I set off for a nearby hill. At the top was another small Bokoblin camp. Not one to learn my lesson, I quickly grabbed another metal crate and whaled into the bitty boars. I found more success this time when some Electric Chuchus appeared, allowing me to pop their gelatinous masses with my boxes, sending waves of electricity through the Bokoblins. The smell of bacon and jam drifted through the air as I mopped up the rest of the enemies. Link and I had earned a break, so we took a few minutes to cook some grub and heal up at the cooking pot.
In the silence following my raiding of the camp and my bout of cooking, I heard a bone-chilling sound when left with little supplies: the sound of a slumbering Hinox. As I peered down at it, I saw an Ancient Orb dangling from a cord around its neck. I knew that I didn’t necessarily have the tools to combat it, so I came up with a cunning plan. I’d land on its sleeping neck and quickly make off with the orb. It would be easy peasy. A short paraglider trip later, I gently landed on the fleshy folds connecting its head to its bulbous body. As I reached towards the orb, the Hinox awoke. As he rose up, I made a desperate grab for my prize, but the collected oils on his skin sent me sliding towards the ground. Little did he know my most dangerous weapons: cowardice and patience. After half an hour of running to the high ground and bombarding my single-eyed friends with bombs before gliding back down and pelting him with more explosives then repeating the process, I had the orb, so I ran back up my new favorite hill and dropped it into the pedestal waiting there.

As I approached my goal, I saw some ruins with a Moblin and some of his smaller Boko buddies. I stealthily made my way around and shot the archers with my arrows. They fell to the ground, easily defeated, and I felt like my luck on Eventide was picking up. As I was picking up one of the enemies’ gooey, beating heart, I saw another pedestal. This one had a rock slab placed over it. No problem for one who has the Stasis rune! After having frozen the slab in time and space, I hit it with my Boko Bat, hoping that it would be enough to free the pedestal. As the flow of time resumed, I rejoiced and started to make my way towards the orb on the nearby platform. Unfortunately, a lumbering blue Moblin happened to see me as well. I quickly ran away only to find myself running into his smaller friends. With them hot on my heels, I readied a bomb and dropped it behind me, hoping to throw them back and deal some small amount of damage. Somehow, Hylia’s luck was with me as the bomb rolled towards some explosive barrels, and I was able to detonate enough of them to kill the Bokoblins following me. Not wanting to take any more chances, I slowly and quietly made my way towards the waiting orb, careful to avoid the gaze of the pacing Moblin. Soon, the orb was reunited with its home and the Korgu Chideh Shrine rose from the top of Koholint Rock.

As I made my way towards the newly revealed shrine, it was clear that Eventide Island had taught me something. With every new challenge I faced as I made my way around its map, I was reminded that no matter how tough I felt when kitted out in my Champion’s Tunic and Master Sword, I could easily become the prey again.
