Medli’s Melodies: Song of Storms Remix

“Song of Storms” is already an amazing song, but the amount of remixing that composers and arrangers can do with the melody makes me adore it even more. The song is like a storm itself, with its potential for endless changes in velocity, intensity, and impact.

This variety can be heard in Glitchxcity’s 2012 remix. I covered a cover of hers before that was inspired by “Song of Storms,” but it was a more recent and calmer lo-fi mix. This cover is her original and more “traditional” remix, by which I mean it’s not lo-fi. It’s hard to call any of Glitch’s work traditional. I can’t ignore the drab sense that word brings, and her tracks never fit that category.

The song’s intensity builds during the first few seconds like storm clouds that gather and billow overhead. Then, the storm abruptly breaks, and everything becomes peaceful and calm. This doesn’t last long, however, as the clouds quickly form again and send out streaks of lightning and roars of thunder as warnings.

The tempo of the song speeds up and begins to move the melody along. These are the track’s powerful winds moving ahead of the clouds, conditioning everything for what is approaching. A surprise alert comes from Navi, who tells us to listen, and then the storm finally makes contact.

The main melody of “Song of Storms” was heard multiple times at the start of the song, but they were more subtle renditions — early raindrops before the heavier precipitation. Now, it burst forth in its full splendor as the techno beat reaches full speed.

It plays rapidly and with a rhythm that matches the turbulence of a tempest. The energy is overwhelming, and it demands everyone’s attention. There is an odd and illogical beauty to it, like watching from a window as a storm rages outside. Though peaceful on the inside, the water beating in unpredictable patterns against the panes makes it impossible to forget how close the chaos actually is.

The highs and lows of timidity and turbulence repeat throughout the track’s duration. Navi also makes sure to repeat her command to listen, which is sometimes all anyone can do in face of nature’s control.
