The writers of Detective Pikachu recently discussed how they would approach the most ambitious crossover in history, and I don’t mean The Avengers. Film writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit imagine what a Super Smash Brothers movie would be like.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Hernandez explains that for a Smash movie to be successful, they would need to flesh out the characters with their own individual movies first, saying:
“I think that the key to doing anything like that is to make sure that the other introductory movies are sensational. It’d be a dream to write something like Legend of Zelda, but before you can get to that Smash Bros stage you have to write the best damn version of The Legend of Zelda that you possibly can. And the same with Mario, the same with Kirby, the same with Star Fox.”
Samit reminds us that movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game were so great because we had the opportunity to get to know the characters before they all came together. He states, “Avengers: Endgame is only as good as it is because we loved all of those characters individually, so when it came together it was just magic. And I think that’s how you have to approach the Smash Bros.”
A Legend of Zelda movie you say? This is all just a “what if?” scenario, so nothing has been announced, but even just the idea of a Zelda movie of the same quality as Detective Pikachu is exciting to think about!
