Special editions of game systems have always been incredibly popular with gamers. There’s something incredibly fun about sporting a handheld, controller, or console that showcases a love of a certain game or franchise. Or, sometimes it is nice to own a device that is simply a different color than everyone else’s for the sake of standing out. Whatever the case may be, owning a unique version of a cherished item is often worth it, especially in the case of one-of-a-kind products such as this custom Game Boy shell created by artist Zoki64.
Yuga’s Art Gallery is a series in which we highlight our favorite artwork from The Legend of Zelda community, as well as some official artwork from the franchise from time to time. Zelda is a series that is constantly changing its style, and after over 30 years of evolving and shifting its visuals, it continues to inspire endless ways for artists to interpret their favorite characters and moments.
I am not really sure where to start with this custom job aside from saying: Just look at it. As seen in their DeviantArt gallery and YouTube channel, Zoki64 goes above and beyond in regard to care and detail, which ensures this and all their other creations are worthy of an incredible amount of admiration.
The design for this Zelda-themed shell truly captures the essence of the era of gaming it pays homage to. The art and visual style from those early Zelda games are very distinct and often bring back memories for many people of the height of the first Nintendo craze. Had this been an official product back in the day, one can only imagine the demand there would have been for it. I wouldn’t even want to think about how high the collector prices would be for it today.
Special editions typically feature unique color schemes or graphics, or a combination of both. This shell is a combination, but it’s on a level that most official products never reach. The image of the Owl, which is a fantastic replication of official art, is clean and definite. The sharp and vivid colors are easily-seen proof of Zoki64’s level of skill and professionalism. Paired with the image are the gold color scheme and glossy finish, both of which are appropriate for the Legend of Zelda motif. The gold also works as a good backdrop for the artwork. Altogether, this shell is an obvious and respectable labor of love.
The Game Boy and all of its beloved games have been sources of joy and inspiration for 30 years now. They gave us a source of fun, a means of escape, a sense of community, and so much more. People are passionate about this system and its games, and Zoki64’s masterpiece is a great example of that love.
