It is no secret to anyone how the newest entry in the Zelda franchise, Breath of the Wild, is an extremely successful game, selling millions of copies worldwide and even selling more copies than the Nintendo Switch itself. It turns out that a big part of the reason for this may lie in the Land of the Maple Syrup.

President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, spoke to the Toronto Star and revealed that the Zelda franchise is very popular in Canada, despite him not really understanding why. “There are certain franchises that overperform in the Canadian market. Legend of Zelda is one. I can’t tell you why but the Canadian consumer loves it.”

He goes on to compare the Canadian audience to the rest of the world. “Every single game in the series has done better with the Canadian audience than the US audience, and the US audience does better than Europe or Japan.” Reggie also notes that “The Canadian audience is the very tip of the mountaintop when it comes to Zelda games”.

So there you have it, folks. May our beloved franchise continue to receive lots of love from its Canadian audience, and the whole world, really.
