Sakurai explains putting stage select before characters in Smash Bros. Ultimate

After yesterday’s incredible Direct presentation, Nintendo Treehouse staffers sat down with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai, who shed some more light on the gameplay.

In a gameplay demonstration of series newcomer Ridley, Sakurai touched on a significant change for versus mode. Players will now select the stage before selecting their characters, vice versa to what the franchise has done previously.

“Every fighter and every stage has advantages and disadvantages in combination,” Sakurai explains. “If you look at the extreme, Little Mac is very useful on a flat surface.

“To add some strategy, we decided to [let players] be able to select the stage beforehand, and that way, in a series of matches, the loser gets to pick the stage.”
