The Swords of Ditto is a new adventure game from Devolver Digital that debuted last year, and I had the opportunity to play it at PAX South 2018 earlier this month. I unexpectedly picked up a game that a pair of players had already begun, and I was stuck playing co-op by myself.
Fortunately, another attendee quickly noticed my struggle and volunteered to play as my partner. We were not able to play for long, but it was unforgettable! We explored a graveyard, stumbled into a hidden underground cavern, and ultimately found a Zelda-style dungeon complete with a Big Key.
Our heroes were equipped with the typical sword, but they also came with an assortment of other equipment. Some were familiar, like bombs or a bow and arrow, but the others were quite strange. My favorite weapon was a large spiked yo-yo. Shortly before our adventure ended, we discovered our last weapon: the ability to make a giant foot smash the ground from the sky. I can only imagine that there will be others to discover in the final game.
I left my experience with The Swords of Ditto remembering two things the most. First, the art style. I wasn’t sold on it at first, but after seeing it in action, I’m a believer. The style is unique and unforgettable. Second, The Swords of Ditto is meant to be played with a friend. When I first decided to try the demo, I did not know the game supported co-operative play. Now, I wonder how you could play it alone.
The Swords of Ditto is scheduled for release in early 2018 for both PS4 and PC.
