Realm of Memories: More than a Fi-ling

Let’s get the controversy out of the way. Fi is a wonderful companion. I’m not trying to be some sort of contrarian on the matter, however, when I played Skyward Sword for the first time, I found Fi to be very delightful. She was a calming presence during my time playing the game and every time she popped up, I felt quite happy.

Now hang on, there may be some of you dismissing my opinion already, so let me clear some things up. As a relatively new Zelda fan, I’ve read and heard the stories of how Fi was super annoying in Skyward Sword, basically treating the player like they did not know their right hand from their left. Fortunately for me, I didn’t play Skyward Sword until it was released on the Nintendo Switch. My perspective was a bit different from those who previously played the game, which is something I’m truly thankful for.

Sure, I can see how people wished she would go away. Maybe even be drastic and wish the Nintendo Wii was never made because of her nuisance. I never got the annoyance that a lot of players felt when they played the game. She wasn’t a hinderance. She wasn’t reminding me of every single thing when I take one step in a certain direction. She was not annoying. What I got was someone who was there wanting me to succeed. She was there pushing me to be the best.

Of all the companions Link has been with, there was something about Fi that made it comforting for me. I’m not sure if it was her ‘voice’ as she spoke in the game, her dancing, or her singing. Yet I felt as if someone was there, guiding me along to better myself.

Naturally, the whole point of a companion in a game is to help you throughout your adventure, making sure you improve your skills as you go. I thankfully never got the handholding a lot of people got during the game. Like all the companions, she was there when I needed her. With her, I felt like everything was going to be ok as she guided me to become the Hero I was supposed to be throughout the adventure.

A Fi-ling that I am quite grateful for.

David just became a Zelda fan several years ago. He's brand new to the series and is enjoying every second of it. When he is not playing video games, he's enjoying his time with his family, friends, and annoying his girlfriend by being weird. Also, Shane’s favorite game is Zelda 2. Who is Shane you ask? Oh, you know!
