[Medli’s Melodies is a series in which we choose our favourite tracks from the Zelda franchise, or highlight a special piece of music from the perpetually creative fan community. Music has always such been such an integral component of Zelda games, and we’re here to celebrate that every week!]
I recently played through A Link to the Past, one of my Zelda titles, and realized that not many of the Light World themes interest me. The Light World may have some of the most iconic tunes in the Zelda series, but most of the music in the Dark World ironically outshines the music in the Light World.
Though while I enjoy the Dark World themes more than the Light World themes, I find the Light World Dungeon theme to be my favorite theme in the entire game. The Light World Dungeon theme brings a certain atmosphere that makes the first three dungeons of the game feel important. The theme brings an intensity that makes me feel like the adventure that I am beginning is going to affect the whole world.
The Eastern Palace is the first regular dungeon that Link enters in A Link to the Past. As soon as the music in the dungeon starts playing, I begin to feel tense. At first, I did not know what caused the tension. After some thought, I came to the conclusion that the music was causing the tension, specifically because music has a strong dramatic vibe.
The Light World Dungeon theme always gives me a mysterious and regal vibe despite its slow and ominous start. These elements help make the theme feel dramatic. I enjoy this theme because it helps me feel invested in the game. With this music playing in the background, running through an endless volley of cannonballs seems more intense than it actually is.
Good video game music will evoke some type of emotion in the player, and that is why I enjoy the Light World Dungeon theme. Usually, I look forward to hearing this theme as it always sounds good and gives me that nice feeling of nostalgia. However, the only time I dread hearing this theme is when Moldorm pushes me off of the platform during the boss fight in the Tower of Hera.
