The name for Nintendo’s up and coming console seems obvious. With the ability to go between console and mobile gaming on a single device, the title of Switch is a no-brainer. However, this doesn’t appear to be the only reason Nintendo has chosen the name.

During an interview with Nintendo Dream, a Japanese gaming magazine, Nintendo explained their reasons for the name. According to them, “Switch” both captures the core design of the console, citing the “ability to seamlessly ‘switch’ between the TV screen and the Switch’s screen,” as well as the change they hope it brings to gaming and entertainment as a whole, saying it is “embodying the idea of being a ‘switch’ that will flip, and change the way people experience entertainment in their daily lives.”

Long time fans of Nintendo will remember that the smash hit Nintendo Wii’s code name was “Revolution,” and revolutionize gaming it did. Only time will tell if the Switch will live up to its name and truly switch the way we see gaming.
