That’s some fine coffee: Twin Peaks ocarina cover in Majora’s Mask

Readers, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it. Don’t wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a Red Rupee, your Grandma’s delicious soup, or a couple of awesome, inventive YouTube videos.

If that heavily altered quote sounded somewhat familiar to you, then you may be a fan of the ’90s murder mystery drama, Twin Peaks. YouTube user Adrian Volovets created a perfect cover of Twin Peaks‘ main theme and “Laura Palmer’s theme” using Link’s ocarina and Mikau’s Guitar of Waves in Majora’s Mask.

A winning combination, considering that both Twin Peaks and Majora’s Mask evoke a deeply unsettling mood and feature endangered townsfolk. Volovets even performed the instruments at in-game locations that look as though they could be from the show, with a cabin in one video and a creepy night-time setting in the other.

Fun fact: Director Takashi Tezuka revealed in 2010 that Twin Peaks was a huge inspiration for Link’s Awakening. “At the time, Twin Peaks was rather popular. The drama was all about a small number of characters in a small town. So when it came to Link’s Awakening, I wanted to make something that, while it would be small enough in scope to easily understand, it would have deep and distinctive characteristics.”
