A remake of Majora’s Mask is something that has been the talk of the Clock Town recently, and a remake of the game was considered previously for the 3DS. As we know, that didn’t happen. Recently, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma was asked for his thoughts on a possible Majora’s Mask remake. He gave the following humorous and cryptic response:

“Please write that I laughed. Don’t make it sound like I laughed because I was troubled or inconvenienced or put out. I don’t want them to read anything into it. But if you want to say that I laughed, I think that would be a good answer.”

When asked how fans should interpret that message, Aonuma said:

“It’s really up to them. If they want to interpret my laughter as, ‘yeah, we’re making it’ or ‘no, we’re not,’ I guess that’s really up to them.”

I’m not quite sure what to make of this response, but only time will tell if fans will be given the chance to revisit the Happy Mask Salesman in Termina.

I think they would earn a lot of money if they remade it. I'm pretty sure it will come out next year, as I think it would be stupid if they don't give us what we want. (I want ALBW more, though.)

  • Abye

I think they should have continued it they could have made an exceptional story it was never finished. I take it as a cynical 'It was never a success' laugh which angers me. The game was great, the concept was awesome. It was something else, something that stood apart from the others that could have joined back in in an awesome second half but was never finished.

  • Jacory Johnson

please make a remake of the majoras mask i loved the game

  • Karpa 27

Maybe he's laughing cause the Wii U title would be related to MM and we're in for a huge surprise?

    • Arthur Debski

That's exactly what I was thinking, although it seems unlikely.

    • Rationalityislost101

I think there is no remake just because they have fulfilled their 3DS requirement already with ALBW and will not be pressed to do another 3DS port. But like you suggested the lore and mystery of MM 'could' be used in the Wii U installment. Although I have always had it pointed out to me that giving explanations to lore that never was meant to be answered can easily turn into a mess and a disappointment compared to the countless theories and views of an entire communities' imagination.

The eerie, moody feel from MM and the great sense of urgency to progress in Zelda games is one of the great aspects of their story. In my honest opinion though, I just don't see them returning to use ANY elements from MM 'until' the design team is motivated and inspired to take the genre in that direction. There was a lot of death and despair in MM and I just will be happy, but shocked if they decide to incorporate any of MM in the next installment.

  • GED9000

I wonder if they won't make a 3D re-release because they plan to do an overhaul and remake of the game itself. That would actually be ideal in my opinion.

  • wandersage

I would LOVE it if they made an HD remake for the WiiU, I really don't care about seeing it in 3D

    • heroofmask

it would be on 3ds not for the 3d but becouse they already remade oot and it would be cheaper then to have to remake all the modles again when they can just reused character modals from oot thats what they didn with it on the n64

      • wandersage

        but I want it…

  • Lucius

He IS the happy mask salesman

    • Andrew

      No that's Shigeru Miyamoto.

  • Momo The Wizard

Excellent! Remaking Majora’s Mask is far too easy to screw up many of the subtle elements that made the game so special.

  • Jafoo

WTF is that supposed to mean?

  • Farore’s Wind

Personally, i hope that he makes a 3DS remake of Majora’s Mask, so i do not have to share it with my brother (like i have to with all platform games)

  • craZ

Hmmm…… what would his laugh mean. It may make sense in a different question but for this one, not really.

  • craZ

Maybe it was a "HAHAHA ,of course it's in the works." Or maybe it's a "HAHAHA, heck no, we are not making it." That's a hard one, I must say.

  • MikeL

    What a douchebag.
But seriously, hopefully his laughter is one of joy and appreciation out of the dedication of the fans. He is cryptic enough for me to believe there's something to it, I don't think he would tease like that otherwise.
It reminds me of his response when asked about a second Wii Zelda after TP came out.

  • Andrew

"Hahahaha you actually think we wouldn't remake this awesome game?"

Though to be fair, their almost releasing Windwaker remake, and the game before that was Ocarina of Time remake. I think it will be a while, if they make nothing but remakes they'll get a stale reputation.

I don't really care, it's on the Wii, and will be on the Wii U VC soon enough. (Since they said 64, GBA and Gamecube games are scheduled to be released on it soon)

  • Andrew

    Soon? I mean eventually.

  • Aonuma, you troll! hahaha

  • Manny

He isn't gonna do a remake he is just gonna make a whole new game!!! hahaah

  • They should remake it for the 3DS. I mean look at how good Ocarina of Time did, and is still doing. They made an amazing game even more amazing. They have absolutely nothing to lose by remaking it. I can just imagine how epic everything would look with the upgraded graphics.

  • Topaz Mutiny

    Biggest. Troll. Ever. XD

  • DarkLink1996

“HA, Oh boy, you’re in for a big surprise”

  • nick

i dont see why hed keep it so secret if they werent making it, that seems kind of dumb, so hes kind of given it away just by saying i wont tell you either way, all hed do is set people up for disappointment that way.

  • TheGrave

Maybe it's a "It's not a remake, but a whole new game taking place in Termina" laugh. I wouldn't mind that, to be honest.

    • heroofmask

then might as remake mm anyways if they gonna do that so people will get both termina games do something better then what kh did when they made the final mix they had kh 1 but not 2 cmon they announced kh 3 your not gonna give new players a chance to play kh 1 and 2

  • Aonuma, you troll! hahaha

  • NicktheHero1

I think he's just teasing us. He'll probably actually remake it. It would be very profitable because it wouldn't cost much and it would probably be really popular.

I've been following the prospect of a Majora's Mask remake since Ocarina of Time 3D's debut on the 3DS. The likelihood of this happening is based on subtle 'clues' or 'hints' if you will that Miyamoto and Aonuma have put out and the overall hype from the fanbase. Given these factors, I estimate around a 80% probability that a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask will come out for the *3DS* within the next 2 years. It will be announced somewhere between the release of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (22 November, 2013), and within 4 months of the release of the new Original Zelda title for the Wii U (which current estimates place at around Q4 of 2014 to Q2 of 2015).

Let us all be clear about one thing, this remake has a 0% probability of getting a remake on the Wii U. The reason for this is simple: The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 had the same engine as The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Given how The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was remade and released for the 3DS, and how developing a remake of a Nintendo 64-era game for the Wii U would require a different engine (and thus a much, much larger development time); the only logical platform that a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask will release on is the 3DS. Again, it will likely be officially announced between November 22, 2013 and June 30, 2015 (highest probability is E3 2014).

To simplify the most likely course of action Nintendo will take regarding the Zelda series: I predict after Wind Waker HD releases this month on eShop (and next month on Disc), and A Link Between Worlds releases in November, that they will wait a few months. Then, most likely early January, after the Holiday season hype for the aforementioned titles is down, they will put out a Nintendo Direct with pictures, and a teaser trailer of the new Wii U Zelda HD game that they are working on. Now, E3 2014 will probably feature more detailed information regarding plot, setting, new features of the Wii U Zelda HD game, along with a playable demo and an official name. Additionally at E3 2014 I predict them to announce The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D co-developed by Grezzo for the 3DS to release in the fall of that year.

Now let's address something: Why in the hell do people have this obscure idea that there is some sort of 'Hero of Time' trilogy? Seriously people, this isn't Tumblr, here most people (aside from the trolls) try focusing on reality and facts rather than fan ideas/fictions/AUs. So let's set it straight shall we? Hyrule Historia, a book sanctioned by Nintendo and edited by Eiji Aonuma, provided a timeline along with descriptions about the timeline. Nowhere in that book does it say or hint to that there will be any games in-between The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Nor has any game with said plot been confirmed or hinted to in ANY interviews. This is nothing but a rumor, a rumor which has no basis in any facts no matter how obscure.

Also, on a side note, some of you may have seen a 'teaser' for a Wii U remake of Majora's Mask on YouTube. That was a fan-made video, it is not something that Nintendo put out, nor sanctioned, nor supported. Anyone that believes that video is a sign that there will be a Majora's Mask remake is delusional.

Aside from all of that, I am looking forward to this eventual remake.

    • vetar

      I agree.
Remake of Majoras Mask i in work, but for 3DS. We gonna probably have new Wii U Zelda and remake Majora's Mask for 3DS Q4 next year.
I think Nintendo start making one Zelda remake, and then one brand new Zelda game.
