Retro working on a new, unannounced Zelda title? Not likely–at least not with the available facts.
The rumor originated over at NeoGaf yesterday as some fans noticed some interesting posts from Retro Studios employee Eric Kozlowski. The new Retro employee was added to staff back in June as an artist, who in August posted about having to shelve an independent project on which he was working on his personal blog:
“I am going to shelve it for a little while as I am going to work on another project that I am super excited about. I can’t talk about it too much but if all goes well it might just be one of my crowning achievements as an artist….”
When NeoGaf members found this, they assumed it was referring to a Retro project and their imaginations started running wild: what Retro Studios project would classify as a “crowning achievement?” They’d already done Donkey Kong Country and Mario Kart, could it be Zelda?
With the recent quote by Miyamoto indicating that Retro would be a good fit for a new Zelda title, and seeing a recent Tweet from Mr. Kozlowski saying that “crunch time” would be more bearable this year due to a co-working bringing in some DVDs, those NeoGaf members assumed that this “crowning achievement” was a Retro Studios project that was currently in “crunch time.” So they began Tweeting the Retro employee with questions.
When Mr. Kozlowski replied he made it clear he was not referring to a Retro project at all with the “crowning achievement” quote, but instead his brother’s book which he intends on illustrating. Unfortunately, it would appear that all the attention, assumptions, and misinformation from that NeoGaf thread was a bit much, because the Retro Studios employee has since deleted his Twitter.
The moral of the story: be careful when listening to rumors as they’re often founded on nothing more than irrelevant pieces of information which bear no relation to one another.
Of course, it certainly may be possible that Retro Studios becomes involved in a Zelda title in the future, or is even currently involved now, and should we learn of such a collaboration occurring we’ll be sure to report it.
