When will we finally get to slay this giant scorpion?

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Eiji Aonuma stated once more that Skyward Sword is expected to hit shelves in early 2011. While the full interview can be read in the August issue of the magazine, ONM revealed only the following direct quotes from Mr. Aonuma online:

“The basis we have now is very, very solid,” Aonuma told ONM in an exclusive interview that appears in the August issue of the magazine which goes on sale today. “Early 2011 – that is what we’re aiming for.”

That Nintendo intends to release Skyward Sword early in 2011 isn’t exactly new information – Aonuma also said in an interview with Gamespot that the new title is expected to be released early next year, and Miyamoto himself stated when the game was first revealed at E3 that it would be in production through the end of 2010.

However, this reinforcement of the release date is reassuring for a fanbase that is all-too-familiar with delays. Despite solid release dates being set in place, Twilight Princess was pushed back several times. That Skyward Sword’s early 2011 release is being continuously confirmed can be interpreted as a good sign, as it suggests that Nintendo is very confident about this particular release date.

Release dates, though, can always be changed, regardless of confirmation and confidence. It’s this oft-proven fact that make release dates a major point of discussion, skepticism and concern for gamers loyal to any franchise.

So what do you think? Will Nintendo hold true to their word this time around, or will unforeseeable circumstances leave us waiting around for Skyward Sword? We’re eager to hear your opinions, so leave them in the comments!

I've been saying this for a while, March 2011… or at least before then. With the 3DS being set for a March release… the launch of Skyward Sword and launch of 3DS are going to have at least a month or a few weeks apart.

It's also why I think the game is a lot closer to completion and more final then most people think.

The game had a demo and there is no reason to delay the game (TP was only ever delayed to modify it for Wii release and make it a launch title). So I'm glad to see an early 2011 release re-affirmed.

    • GamerRob1

Well that is what Reggie said. Nintendo however did state that he was mistaken, and it could be released in time for christmas holiday. Atleast the 3DS, Skyward Sword will remain early 2011. Crossing my fingers! ^_^

      • TheMaverickk

On the flip side the launch schedule for Nintendo games over the next 5 months is already pretty filled up.

I mean you have Metroid: Other M for the end of August, Kirby's Epic Yarn for October, Donkey Kong Country Returns for the holidays. There are other big name titles as well that I know Nintendo are promoting, like Epic Mickey which is coming out in November… if Nintendo were to release Skyward Sword before the end of the year it would completely over shadow it's own big releases for the end of the year and I don't think they'd want that.

Don't get me wrong though… I'd be thrilled if I was playing it before the end of the year though.

        • Chainoftermina

I don't suppose you know the release date for Sonic Colors? XD

        • GamerRob1

No, I meant the 3DS, NOT Skyward Sword, I was correcting your release date for the 3DS, Reggie said the 3DS would be released in march 2011, but Nintendo said he was mistaken, and the 3DS might find release for the holiday season. Not skyward sword, skyward sword will remain early 2011. lol

  • Ashmic

God i want more official are of characters ETC.

  • Gerudude

As I have said before, if they want a maximum sales hit, they’ll have to release it around christmas 2010.
That will be a bigger sales hit than “somewhere” “early” 2011.

But then, I am rather the impatient type.

    • GamerRob1

Most people are impatient. But taking in to consideration the people who create Zelda, they do not care about the Holidays. Especially Mayimoto, he won't release this Zelda until its in its final stage. He wants to release it as perfect as it can be, along with Eji Aonuma. But seeing how confident they are about this release date, im happy with it. I just hope they don't delay it lol.

      • TheMaverickk

Also Zelda titles have always done well regardless of what time of the year they are released. Each subsequent Zelda has done extremely well at launch.

        • GamerRob1

Yes that is because Mayimoto put his heart in to the game 🙂 He wants it to be perfect, and he works as hard as he can to make it that way.

  • Tsubasa_Zero

Ye, we would all love for it to release in 2010, like many really hang on too. And even early 2011 isn't that specifik. I would say Q1 2011, but Just like all other games it can easily become Q3 2011

  • Goro

I'm going to say January or Febuary of 2011. Mostly January. With the 3DS coming sometime around April or March 2011(Maybe even earlier). It would be a bad business move to release the game within a month's time frame of the 3DS. I going to stick with my logic and say between January 20 through Febuary 18.

  • Shadowoflight

If Nintendo needs 5 more years I have peace with that.
The legend of Zelda is worth waiting for.

    • lolknight

WOW! Than that would mean it would feature 30+ dungeons, 500+ areas, 25 sidequests and 3-5 Worlds (skyloft, Hyrule, etc). without counting the twists in the story!

      • Muskiok

And you know, we would all love it if that happened. Those of us who survived the wait, anyway XD.

  • GamerRob1

Fairly decent release date! Can't wait! Seeing how confident they are about it I am crossing my fingers that it doesnt change! 😀

  • guestness

Releasing Skyward Sword during christmas is actually a bad financial move. Zeldas will sell well at any time, so there is no reason for it to be eating into the sales of their other games at christmas time. The smart business move is to have people buying the more release-date dependent games during christmas, then release skyward sword shortly after. Every copy of Zelda sold during november and december is a possible lost sale of another game. The only real downside to no Zelda at christmas is that you wont be playing it on christmas day (fond memories etc).

It works out well for the investors, and the art team as well because art teams with good ideas will always want more time if they can get it. So its a win win as long as the game is truly a classic. If the game is a classic then the franchise legend grows and translates into future sales of all other zelda products.

I just got done wating for Starcraft 2 for like 11 years so, zelda in 2011 of any quarter is fine by me.

  • lolknight

I understand where you are coming from, guestness, but, you know….. I WANTED TO PLAY IT ON CHRISTMAS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just paid off my pre-order at GameStop yesterday, and they told me it was slotted for an April 1 release. Of course that can change, but it is a more definite date than just "early 2011."

  • TaffyPool

Again…February 21st, 2011. Mark it down. 25 years since the serieswas first introduced. The marketing campaign can celebrate the series long success and pull back those gamers-of-yesteryear who fondly remember the original, but for onereason another, have stopped playing the series. Preying on nostalgia is a very effective tool — just look at NSMB Wii, and Sonic 4 if Sega were to make it a full retail release rather than an episodic download.

    • Twilit mask of time

i agree, I think that this game will very likely be released on the 21st, They still get a lot more time to work on it, and it would attract long departed members back to the franchise. Plus it probably means epic pre-order
      gift too.

  • Majora

It's probably going to be released Jan. 1 12:01 AM. LOL

  • rawremmie

if they were to change the release date, it would prolly be because the game isnt ready or it could be improved. if it could be made better, why would you want to play it early? okay, i can understand the eagerness, but this game is supposed to be awesome so it really needs to be awesome.

  • Majora

I also hope that the won't hurry on the boss and temples because I want Skyward Sword to have an awesome last ending and hard last boss.

  • LoZyMugglegater

It'd be sweet if it came out in March, 'cause it'd be the best birthday present imagineable!:D

    • scrivs

lol my birthday's March 23rd but if it's coming out March 22nd im definitely not going to wait an extra day, idk about you 😛

  • LoZyMugglegater

Also the longer it takes the better it will be in the end.because while I hate waiting it always pays off.

  • Thareous33

Sorry, LoZyMugglegatet, I must that I prefer a release before March, because my birthday is in early Febuary. Not to be selfish, but that would be the best present I ever received also. But I would happy if you got your wish and happier still if they end up finishing it up before Noel, while it is equally epic as it could have been in the New Year. ;-D

  • Anonymous

I hope he doesnt mean that it will be coming out in early 2011 just for Japan, and then the rest of the world a mid or late 2011, because I don't speak japanese and don't even know how to import stuff, and I'm really looking forward to playing this game…

    • GamerRob1

Who knows, all we can really do is wait and see =

  • wayofthesheikah

I think Nintendo will stick with the Q1 2011 release time, it'd be a good way to make even more money during the post-holiday season. Plus I'd rather not see Skyward Sword be compared to other titles coming out around Holiday 2010. TP was only pushed back twice because of the whole Wii augmentation. Plus we got a working demo of Skyward Sword at E3 this year, and it's even been said that the majority of the game has already been finished. So unless they run into major issues or decide to turn the entire Zelda fanbase on its head by pulling a Halo 2 on us (a.k.a. recreate the entire game from scratch), I doubt Skyward Sword will be pushed back. And even if it is, Zelda fans aren't known as some of the most patient fans in gaming for nothing, are they? =p

Either way I won't mind, I trust Nintendo's judgment and would much rather wait a bit and play an epic game rather than a half-assed one rushed out to meet high demand. If there's one thing Nintendo (and the entire Zelda series) is known for, it's quality.
