Skyward Sword HD has an updated control system, supports button-only play

After the exciting Nintendo Direct announcement that Skyward Sword HD will be coming to the Switch on July 16, everyone’s next question was how will the controls differ from the Wii.

Originally, Skyward Sword was played using the Wii Motion Plus as your sword and Nunchuk as your shield.

Now, in Skyward Sword HD, you’ll control the sword with the right Joy-Con, and the shield with the left. You’ll also be able to perform other special actions, such as shooting a bow and arrow, with the two Joy-Cons.

However, for our handheld players and Switch Lite owners, there’s also an option to play using the console buttons, with the right stick purely controlling your sword.

Tilt the stick, your sword swings to follow.

Eiji Aonuma also explained in the Direct that, “with the increased processing power of the Switch, the controls will feel smoother and more intuitive.”

Pair this with some shiny new Skyward Sword HD Joy-Cons and you’ve got quite the adventure awaiting you.

Skyward Sword HD will be released on July 16, 2021, and is available to preorder now on the Nintendo eShop.
