The early 1990s was a magical time for American sports. Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were on top of the NBA world. The Dallas Cowboys rose to prominence and won three Super Bowls. Cal Ripkin Jr. broke the record for most consecutive Major League Baseball games played. While my adolescence was filled with the perpetual bliss of witnessing these milestones in professional athletics history, one particular sport held my attention like no other: professional boxing.
To this day, Mike Tyson remains one of my favorite boxers of all time. Dubbed “Iron Mike,” Tyson was king of the heavyweight boxing division in the late 1980s. Known for an impeccable combination of speed and power, Iron Mike routinely knocked out the competition within the opening moments of the first round. Needless to say, the entire sports world was captivated with Tyson’s success; however, another industry quickly took notice of the heavyweight champion’s boxing prowess: the video game industry.
After becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champ in 1987, Nintendo featured Iron Mike in the legendary boxing game Punch-Out!! for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The thrill of attempting to best the most dominant boxer in the world through the medium of a video game was nothing short of spectacular. Despite my enthusiasm, I was never quite able to survive the gauntlet of boxing challengers and dethrone Iron Mike Tyson.
The years quickly passed, as did my love for Punch-Out!! on the NES. While I remained an avid boxing fan, my video game collection transitioned to newer Nintendo consoles, and I swiftly developed a love for another franchise: The Legend of Zelda. Little did I know that my fascination with boxing and my budding relationship with the Zelda series were destined to collide.
A glaring dark spot in my Legend of Zelda experience are the two NES titles; however, in late 2016, I stumbled upon an NES Classic Edition while browsing an online retail site. I quickly made the purchase and began playing the “black sheep” of the Zelda series: The Adventure of Link. The game was mercilessly challenging, and I rapidly expended all three of my lives. The screen became red as Ganon’s evil face scoffed at my failure, and it was then that a wave of nostalgia rushed over me like a flood. Ganon’s taunting laugh. I had heard it before!
As I scoured the Internet while simultaneously prodding the depths of my memory, the source of my recollection came into view. One of my childhood archenemies from Punch-Out!! was also infatuated with burlesquing my misfortune. Christened Soda Popinski, the Russian boxer was among the stoutest fighters in the game. With confidence oozing from his every pixel, Popinski would mock the player at the beginning of each round.
Ganon’s laughter in The Adventure of Link and Soda Popinski’s laughter in Punch-Out!! contain the same tones. The lone distinction is that Ganon’s laughter is much slower. As I reflected upon the crossover of my favorite sport and video game franchise, a glowing smile emerged. Though the threads of connection are rather thin, I will always remember that two of my favorite passions are forever interconnected.
