Remember the iQue? No? That’s okay, not many people know about the China-only Nintendo console. The iQue was essentially a controller you plugged into the TV to play a selection of Nintendo 64 games. Only 14 games were released in total for this bizarre system, and after nearly 15 years, the ROMs for these games were dumped and shared online for all to emulate.
Wherever you find ROM dumps and emulation, modders aren’t far behind. And what did modders decide to do first with these new ROMs? Add custom levels to Ocarina of Time of course!
You can see what this looks like in the video below, but essentially the game looks normal on the surface. Link gets out of bed and runs through Kokiri Forest. Upon entering the Lost Woods however, instead of the usual maze-like area that greets you, you are met with a custom built town.
This may not seem like a big deal to some; modders have been adding custom levels and other fun stuff to Ocarina of Time for years now. The main reason this is so interesting is that the iQue is such a forgotten oddity in the Nintendo family, and the fact that it has taken so long for people to finally dump these ROMs on the internet for all to get their hands on.
