Zelda live action movie is included in Sony’s “pay-1” contract with Netflix

The upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie releasing on May 7th, 2027 has already found its future streaming home on Netflix.

The movie will be distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and is co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo alongside Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel Studios. The movie’s director is Wes Ball, who is known for directing the Maze Runner movie series and the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is starring as Link alongside Bo Bragason who is starring as Princess Zelda.

SPE’s new global Pay-1 deal with Netflix involves the licensing rights for a number of Sony’s new feature films. This means that the Zelda movie, alongside other movies like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will exclusively stream worldwide on Netflix after its theater run and digital-at-home entertainment release periods are over.

“Our partnership with Netflix has always been incredibly valuable,” said Paul Littmann, EVP of Global Distribution, Sony Pictures Television. “This new Pay-1 deal takes that partnership to the next level and reinforces the enduring appeal of our theatrical releases to Netflix’s global audience. It also further underscores the strength of our independence and unique ability to create meaningful opportunities that benefit our creative stakeholders, consumers, and world-class partners.”

Full global availability pertaining to this deal on Netflix should be available by early 2029.
