Today sees the release of an interesting little indie game that Legend of Zelda fans will definitely want to pay attention to.
Cassette Boy is a puzzle-action RPG that, at first glance, appears to invite players to a 2D world, but allows the perspective to be rotated Fez style to reveal a land of 3D voxels.
Many of its gameplay elements will be familiar to Zelda fans, with the game abundant in world exploration, dungeon crawling, and puzzle solving. Its Game Boy aesthetic is rather reminiscent of the original Link’s Awakening, and there even appears to be a Minish Cap-style shrinking mechanic at the 1:40 mark in the trailer below.
Cassette Boy is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S on PC (via Steam). A playable demo is also available on all platforms.
Siliconera gave the game a high-scoring 90 out of 100 in its recent review, which claims “Cassette Boy is at its best when challenging you to rethink your perspective to solve puzzles in this The Legend of Zelda and Fez style adventure.”
It also received a solid 7 out of 10 from Nintendo Life. “A familiar adventure that pulls from the likes of Zelda and Pokémon for its setting and story, Cassette Boy is nevertheless a smart puzzler with a great visual style,” their review reads.
