Team Asano’s Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is Square’s take on a Zelda style game. There are similar mechanics in Elliot that can be seen in 2D Zelda games. Players can use swords and bows like in the Zelda series. You will also be able to equip shields to defend yourself and blow up things with bombs. Blood drops act as Elliot’s health bar in a fashion akin to Link’s heart pieces. Throughout the game, you will raid dungeons, and unlike those in Zelda which are often called temples, the ones in Elliot are known as shrines. Gameplay will also allow you to cut grass with your weapon and break boxes and pots to recover your health and obtain money which takes the form of green gems similar to rupees. The story revolves around saving the kingdom of Philabieldia, which closely compares with the main plot of each game in the Zelda series where Link saves Hyrule or another country in danger.
The biggest surprise to Zelda fans with Elliot was the introduction of the fairy companion, Faie. She plays the same role that Navi did in Ocarina of Time and their in-game models look nearly identical. The primary difference between Faie and Navi is that Faie can actually participate in combat and fight alongside you. Special abilities that aid in navigation and puzzle solving such as increasing sprint speed and teleportation is thanks to her as well. She can also be controlled in place of Elliot or by another person in multiplayer mode.
While The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales shares many gameplay elements with The Legend of Zelda, it doesn’t have its shortage of differences either. For example, Elliot has access to seven different weapon types including a chain and sickle. While players could fight monsters in Zelda, the combat system is more dynamic and used more often in Elliot. In trademark action RPG fashion, you can create a chain of combos with each attack and the amount of damage dealt is shown with numbers.
