Every dog has its day. After almost 25 years of sitting in the dog house, the blue dog in Majora’s Mask finally nabs a win at Mamamu Yan’s Doggy Racetrack. Why is this a big deal? Well, anyone who has played the charming mini-game knows that you play by placing your bets on a fido, and then watch if they win or not for a chance to win it big. The unspoken rule, however is to never pick the blue dog. The unlucky pup just doesn’t win. For years, everyone figured he wasn’t racing material. But one day in 2024, the can-do azure canine finally proved us all wrong.
With the help of Falkush and several other Majora’s Mask fans, Youtuber Vidya James explains in his video (with the help of a glitch and a lot of math) that even with insurmountable odds, it is absolutely possible for the blue dog to win. Falkush estimates that the chances of blue dog winning are one in 25 million. That’s a crazy low percentage, but it isn’t zero. He even shows visual proof of the dogged determined pup finally making the win of his dreams. It chiefly depends on the game’s RNG combined with randomly assigned variations of each dog’s racing stats at the start of every race. With this in mind, the possibilities are a lot, so much so, that it would take a human player at least 34 million years to hit every possible outcome. Yikes.
To help speed up the process, Falkush applied a bit of computer handiwork to help generate race outcomes at a much faster rate. The results were surprisingly optimistic: the blue dog achieved second place at least twice. Could this mean that blue dog would finally win? Or was it a myth after all? Falkush pressed on. He processed 8,410 races for three days straight. Finally, blue dog had his day:
After almost 25 years, blue dog made history and became the crown winner of the Mamamu dog race! It took Falkush about 30,000 simulations to achieve this outcome. When interviewed by Falkush, blue dog remarked, “Ruff! …I’m here for my wife and child. There’s no way I’ll lose!”
So if anyone ever told you they saw the blue dog win and you didn’t believe them, you might want to reach out to them and make amends. Blue dog is now the heralded canine Seabiscuit of Termina. We honestly can’t think of a more heartwarming way to start 2025.
