Echoes of Wisdom gets off to a rollicking start, leaving little time for rest. From the initial but temporary Link battle against Ganon, to Zelda’s stressful escape from first the encroaching rift, then the patrolling Hyrule Castle guards, the player is thrown from one moment of conflict to another. In some ways, Suthorn Village is the player’s first chance to rest and just explore a location, albeit a very small one. In their harp rendition of the “Suthorn Village Theme”, Samantha Ballard manages to encapsulate the feeling of rest that Zelda finally gets to experience when she stumbles upon Suthorn Village.

“Suthorn Village Theme” by Samantha Ballard

From the very beginning, Samantha Ballard invites listeners to experience a sense of calm. The repetition of three notes with a rest between emphasizes the respite players finally feel; there is no rift threatening to send us to the Still World nor any guards’ gazes to avoid. There are only the kind people of Link’s rural home village.

As the song progresses, the notes lower but don’t lose any of their chill vibes. The familiar melody repeats but the deeper sound to the notes calls to mind Suthorn Village’s protector: Link. As Zelda wanders the village speaking to its residents, Link’s name is constantly on their lips. He has fought to save kidnapped children, reuniting families even at the secret cost of his voice.

As mentioned earlier, much of Stephanie Ballard’s cover (and the “Suthorn Village Theme” in general) involves a set of notes that are followed by a rest of varying lengths. These moments of silence honor Link’s sacrifice. For those that enter the Still World without Tri’s protection pay a cost for leaving. In a clever execution of lore applied to gameplay, Link’s cost is the loss of his voice, explaining why he continues the tradition of being a silent protagonist. Through the silence afforded by the leisurely pace of this tune and her own interpretation of it, Samantha Ballard allows listeners to take a silent mental break while also paying tribute to Link’s sacrifice.

Samantha Ballard’s cover of the “Suthorn Village Theme” is the perfect antidote to a hectic schedule. When work, school, or other stressors threaten to sink us into our own rifts of anxiety, this cover gives us a moment to rest and remember that just as Zelda takes a moment to breathe, we must do the same. It also tells a tale of Link’s courage in its silence, allowing listeners to borrow strength from the hero for the next step in our own journeys.
