Tears of the Kingdom continues to soar as bestseller in Switch eShop charts

Tears of the Kingdom continues to flex its dominance even as new hits Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Sonic Superstars enter the Switch market. According to October 21st eShop charts, Tears of the Kingdom landed at a comfortable fifth place out of the top thirty most-purchased Switch games, and it’s not even the holiday season yet.

This comes as no surprise, of course, for an award-winning Zelda game. But just three days after its launch, Tears of the Kingdom sold a jaw-dropping 10 million copies. It sold at such lightning speed, it made its mark in the Guinness World Records as the fastest-selling Nintendo video game of all time. Nintendo reported in their Quarter 1 update that it sold over 18.51 million units of the game in May and June. Considering that it launched May 12, that’s only one month and a half!

How many units of Tears of the Kingdom have been sold since? We don’t know for sure right now. Industry experts believe that figure is about 20 million, but if it continues to stay in the top 10 on Switch eShop charts, the numbers are probably growing well beyond that. To compare, Breath of the Wild sold about 30.5 million copies in its lifetime, the most out of any Zelda title at the time. But if Tears of the Kingdom is already nearing those numbers, it could very well become the Secretariat of Zelda games. We’ll find out just how far its Zonai wings can soar in Nintendo’s next report for Quarter 2.
