Bombers’ Notebook: Medigoron

You’ve heard of Gorons, and you’ve probably heard of Biggoron, but have you heard of the elusive Medigoron? Chances are, you’ve run into this Goron of medium proportions, but you probably didn’t know his name. Medigoron is the largest Goron within the confines of Goron City and the owner of Medigoron’s Blade Shop, better known as the location where Link can buy the ever fragile Giant’s Knife from Medigoron himself for a hefty 200 rupees. While he has earned himself a bit of a reputation among players as a scam artist, there’s more to Medigoron than his questionable business tactics.

A Gossip Stone reveals that Medigoron forgot to take into account his own size when creating his shop, which is why he is permanently lying down, having very little range of motion within the cramped space. It’s possible that this lack of foresight is partially responsible for his less than stellar blacksmithing skills. It can’t be easy to create a blade when you can hardly move your body, and after having just bought an entire shop, you can imagine Medigoron was probably down on Rupees. Biggoron mentions that his younger brother, Medigoron, is a less proficient swordsmith and Medigoron himself admits his blades have durability issues. But, unfortunately, he needs the cash.

Medigoron eventually leaves his cramped store to celebrate with the rest of Hyrule after the events of Ocarina of Time come to a close. It took him close to seven years to craft an incredibly fragile Giant’s Knife, but that was in a timeline where Ganondorf took over the world. Hopefully he will be able to live up to his older brother’s blacksmithing in this new Hyrule without Ganondorf.

While I can understand the feelings of those who spent their hard earned rupees on a useless Giant’s Knife, I can’t help but feel a little bad for Medigoron after learning more about his situation. He still probably shouldn’t be selling such fragile blades for so much, and maybe his time would be spent better learning from his older brother. I’ll give Medigoron credit where it’s due, though, because, as a child playing Ocarina of Time, I found Medigoron’s shop very exciting, as it’s somewhat secret location and promise of a new blade enticed me. I don’t remember how I ended up feeling about the breakable Giant’s Knife, but I’ll always remember the excitement I felt when finding Medigoron’s Blade Shop.
