The inspiration that Pokémon Legends: Arceus took from Breath of the Wild is evident from the first moment you step foot into the Hisui region. It’s a calm, peaceful environment, with pastel tones and vast open plains. Even some of the musical choices reflect those of Breath of the Wild, primarily featuring the piano and other simple instruments, particularly in the battle themes. Unfortunately, when facing most of the legendary Pokémon, the special themes that accompany them were not present, but that doesn’t stop some musicians from wondering: “what if?”
TeruTeruSky has recreated one of my personal favorite themes, the “Regi Battle Theme” from the Hoenn games, imagining what it would have been like if recreated in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Honestly, I was rather shocked that it didn’t appear when a certain colossus takes center stage for a brief battle, but, thanks to this composer, I don’t have to gripe about its missing presence.
The instant I heard the repetition of the menacing piano keys, the first thing that came to mind was the nerve-wracking theme of the Guardians in Breath of the Wild, and I think that’s very fitting. Just like the Guardians, the Regis are powerful titans, awakened from centuries of slumber and raring for a fight. Though the core inspirations of both creatures are different, one can’t deny that their glowing eye patterns are strikingly similar as well. As for the music, the pulsing drum beat and eerie strings also play the same role in each piece, keeping us on our edge as we face these powerful foes.
This is no coincidence, either. TeruTeruSky mentions that, when creating this song, the “Guardian Battle” theme was an inspiration behind the piece. They imagine the fight would have been similar to the encounters with Guardians, having powerful laser blasts (likely in the form of Hyper Beam) that chased you as the daunting music also follows wherever you run. TeruTeruSky even went beyond that and made multiple musical phrases similar to that of the Noble Pokémon battles in Legends!
Now having heard what might have been, I am even more curious as to why something like this wasn’t implemented into Legends. I yearned for the original golem trio long before I discovered this piece — they are my favorite legendaries after all. But now that I have it, I can only imagine and hope that future DLC could make this happen. Not only do I imagine that, but now more than ever would I love to see a clash of these titans.
