Stone Cold Steve Austin, noted professional wrestler and beer drinker, was recently doing what we all love to do when bored at work: play video games. Specifically, Breath of the Wild. WWE tweeted some great behind the scenes photos from the WWE Network show The Broken Skull Sessions, one of which included Stone Cold playing Breath.
The Broken Skull Sessions is a network exclusive that has Mr. Cold chatting with his fellow wrestlers and crew about all things wrestling, past and present. It’s a show for die-hard wrestling fans to learn more about their favorite people, and not at all a gaming show. However, during the show and promotional material, the conversation can go in very different directions.
To editorialize a little bit, it’s really important that WWE decided to use that specific picture in their tweet. Stone Cold has been very vocal about his love for The Legend of Zelda throughout the years, even going as far as saying that Breath was his favorite Zelda game while promoting the show. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, Stone Cold was (and honestly still is) one of the most hardcore people around. He’s loud, strong, jacked, and a powerful presence. Seeing him, sitting in a chair, playing The Legend of Zelda on set is such a great visual for nerds like us. People who feel invalidated or silly for liking these games can point to this beast of a man and say “He’s one of us.” It’s something that I wish I had known when I was a 10 year old Stone Cold and Zelda fan. It’s great!
And that’s the bottom line.
