Nintendo financial report shows promising sales, growth, and the hint of a new console

This past week Nintendo held their financial report for the first half of the fiscal year, revealing current sales statistics and future plans for the Nintendo Switch and beyond.

As expected, the Nintendo Switch has continued to sell like crazy, reaching a lifetime total of over 90 million units! If the sales continue at the same rate, then Nintendo expects the Switch to reach over 100 million units sold by the end of the fiscal year in March of 2022. Although that number oddly looks small compared to the 270 million Nintendo Accounts that have been registered. Between the two, that is an extremely large number of Nintendo players out in the world.

On top of this, many titles dubbed “evergreen” have continued to sell extremely well, including Breath of the Wild which has sold 1.7 million units between April and September of 2021. Shortly after, Nintendo stated that they expect the Breath of the Wild sequel to help continue to drive sales of the Switch while reconfirming its 2022 release window.

However, even with the Switch sales remaining strong, Nintendo is looking forward to the future by teasing the next console after the Switch. While this comes as no surprise, as Nintendo always is planning for what is next, it is exciting to see that plans are moving along enough for Nintendo to tease the next console. Whenever the Switch 2 releases, I am sure it will bring many new Zelda adventures just like the original Switch.

Finally Nintendo covered their plans to continue to expand their IPs through various media outlets. These include the theme parks, Illumination movies, merchandise, and mobile apps, as well as a brand new Nintendo store in Osaka Japan. The Osaka store is planned to open by the end of 2022, which will make it the third official Nintendo store to open.

Between the Switch sales, tease of the new console, and the expansion of official Nintendo stores into Osaka, this financial meeting shows that Nintendo continues to have plenty of confidence going forward.
