Fan art comes in many forms and shapes, and sometimes that includes animation. One such work was built in the Unreal Engine to imagine what The Wind Waker could look like with more technical fidelity. We’ve seen similar works with other games like Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask a number of times, but this is the first time I’ve seen it done with Wind Waker.
For me, the most interesting aspect is the environment. I believe artist Vitor Maccari has taken the familiar approach of overhauling an old game with modern technology while managing to keep the things that make Wind Waker so visually appealing. For something like this, I would have expected a realistic-looking Link and some vast ocean, but this video maintains a sort of diorama look to it. When the camera pulls back it looks more like a painted landscape model as opposed to a hyper-realistic ocean scene. I think having that sort of charming appearance helps keep this from veering too far away from the things that make Wind Waker so fun to look at.
You can look more about his process of building all of this in another video and check out Maccari’s Instagram page for even more details and other works of his.
