For the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, talented fan animator RwanLink has made a new film celebrating the game’s release. The story first shows Clock Town on fire while the final battle between Majora’s final form and Fierce Deity Link takes place. The second part of the film shows the Carnival of Time in a format similar to a playable game with the option to move around as Link. To make the film, RwanLink used Unreal Engine 5. It took him around 8 months to complete the project with 40 hours each week spent working on it. There are actual nods to Studio Ghibli characters including No Face and Yubaba from Spirited Away. In response to the positive comments about the details put into the fight between Link and Majora, RwanLink explains how he animated the scenes in an additional “behind the scenes” video.
“Both 2D and 3D animation have their own strengths and limitations, but for this video, I had to recreate the same 2D style constraints in 3D to capture that anime feel,” says RwanLink. “I’ve tried this approach in the past but this is the first time I finally figured it out and it became one of my biggest learnings while making this video. I’m really happy with how the final result turned out!”
