Last year, we learned of a very interesting, canceled Legend of Zelda project from Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios. Intended as an action/RPG game that would star Sheik, the game’s story would have focused on the “bad ending” of Ocarina of Time, exploring the journey of the last Sheikah while Dark Gerudo were “giving their 100-year birth” to Ganon.
Now, as an update, the ongoing “Nintendo Gigaleak” which began in 2020 has provided us with additional reinforcement of the project’s previous existence. As translated, courtesy of Source Gaming editor-in-chief:
Retro Studios artist Sammy Hall had previously shared pre-production artwork for the project dated somewhere between 2005 and 2008. Unfortunately, the artist’s profile on ArtStation had since been scrubbed of the artwork, but not before some images found their way onto Twitter.
In a conversation with IGN in May 2020, Hall believed much of the concept artwork likely had not been seen by Nintendo, and mentioned that the project was canceled the minute the now ex-Retro leads Mark Pacini, Todd Keller and Kynan Pearson left the studio.
