EVO 2020 canceled due to COVID-19, online version to be held instead

On May 1, 2020, the organizers of EVO announced via Twitter that this year’s EVO tournament will be canceled due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. EVO was to take place from July 21 to August 2.

EVO is the largest annual video game tournament in the world, with many of the most popular fighting games, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mortal Kombat 11, being major sources of competition that draw thousands of competitors to the event’s traditional setting in Las Vegas. This year’s EVO was intended to take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. All entry tickets are being refunded, but players and spectators who planned to participate will also need to cancel any hotel reservations and flights, which has been a common occurrence for people who planned to attend events these past few months.

The EVO team still hopes to keep the tournament alive in one form, however, by holding an online event in place of the traditional one. Details are unknown about this version of the event, but more information about it is expected to be provided soon.
