Zelda cartoon screenwriter reminisces about his time working on the show

As bizarre and goofy as The Legend of Zelda cartoon was, it seems there was a lot of thought and heart that went into its creation. Twitter user @kzinssiebroiler decided to enhance her recent playthrough of the series (which included playing and watching all of the spinoff material) by reaching out to Eve, a writer for the show and also the sister of screenwriter Rob Forward, to ask some questions about the show.

Rob, through messages from Eve, relayed his overall positive experience with working on the show. He reveals some fun information such as why Ganon teleports everywhere (the robe was hard to animate) and the infamous “Excuuuuuse me Princess” running gag (it was an old Steve Martin bit), but he also was able to air some behind-the-scenes drama about DIC, the production company.

“‘Zelda‘ was almost invisible at the time,” Forward recalls. “It was only on Fridays, the other four days were the Super Mario Brother Super Show, which had all the studio attention… I found myself being left completely alone other than a few budgetary and FCC requirements.” Luckily though, it was perfect for him. “It’s actually my favorite way to work.”

There are tons of great bits of information in the thread, but be warned, it does get a little NSFW when talking about Sprite and her origins. Nothing too graphic, but just a word of caution.

Oh boy…
