Two decades.
That’s how long Zelda Universe has been around. We’ve spanned four console generations and almost triple the amount of time Link spent in the Sacred Realm in Ocarina of Time. To really hammer it into perspective, we’re only one month younger than Wikipedia.
We’ve gathered many contributors for this month — from existing and former staff, readers, forumgoers, and our social media followers — to look back on all of our fondest memories of the Zelda Universe over its 20-year history.
As it turns out, 2021 is crammed full of Nintendo-related anniversaries. In fact, there are so many that, in this month alone, we’re already seeing an overlap: The original Legend of Zelda game — and in turn, the franchise itself — turns 35 on February 21, 2021! Throughout the third week of February, we will also be dedicating our regular columns to the game that started it all.
Of course, you can bet that we’re not the only ones getting ready to celebrate such an incredible milestone. Nintendo truly set the bar high with the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct last year, and it doesn’t seem unreasonable to assume that the company will be willing to give Zelda the same birthday treatment — which means it may be a very exciting month for news, too!
Looking back and looking forward, there is no greater time to be a Zelda fan, no matter which direction you’ll be looking this month. Zelda Universe is nothing without its loyal community, so from all of us to all of you: Thank you, and game on!
