In a recent miHoYo video that features Genshin Impact‘s concept artist Bu Yiding, level artist Maizi, and open-world level designer Xiao Ao, the company explains how the Genshin Impact Dragonspine region was created. In a nearly seven-minute video, the company explains what inspired the design, direction, and overall ambiance of the game’s region.
Bu Yiding begins by discussing the important role weather played in the determination of color saturation, light, and visibility. It was discussed how Mondstadt has a more spring theme, in contrast to Liyue, which draws its inspiration from fall, and leaves Dragonspine as the winter-inspired area. Both Bu Yiding and Maizi go on to discuss how locations in real life, such as the European Alps, aided in the development of Dragonspine’s design.
The addition of Dragonspine was part of the 1.2 update, which also added new characters such as Ganyu.
