Yuga’s Art Gallery: Great Clay

There’s a reason the Great Bay has “Great” in its title. It’s not only one of the most memorable areas to explore in Majora’s Mask, but it has also remained a fan favorite stage in the Super Smash Bros. series since its Melee debut almost 20 years ago.

Whether your first Great Bay experience involved a melancholic farewell to Mikau or a fast-paced brawl between Nintendo’s all-star roster, there’s no denying just how instantly recognizable this fictional locale is, and this excellent sculpted interpretation is no exception.

YouTube user Cynical Scorpio used the latter version for inspiration in his amazing clay sculpture, noting that “this model is based specifically on the Melee stage version.” He has a number of clay sculptures featured on his channel, but for this project, he clarifies, “This is the first time I’ve recreated a video game stage out of clay.”

As you’d expect, the Marine Research Laboratory and the Giant Turtle are prominently featured, but there are also many more details that complete the piece. There’s a sign and an Owl Statue at the forefront, while back at the beach, if you look carefully, you’ll see huts, canoes, umbrellas, and the cave that leads to Zora Cape.

Throughout the video, Cynical Scorpio presents sped-up footage of the creation of all of these tiny elements, with markers used to add some extra color and detail. My favorite features are the palm trees made with cocktail sticks!

So, what made Cynical Scorpio choose the Great Bay? “It’s one of my favorite stages from Melee,” he explains. “And Melee was a big childhood game.”

Cynical Scorpio has also created other Nintendo-themed clay projects, such as Whomp’s Fortress from Super Mario 64 and the S.S. Dolphin ship parts from the original Pikmin.
