Medli’s Melodies: Breath of the Wild Main Theme

From “Zelda’s Lullaby” to “Dragon Roost Island” and “Midna’s Lament”, The Legend of Zelda series is iconic for producing so many incredible musical themes, which fully immerse fans into the many versions of Hyrule. Although visually stunning, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild tends to focus more on the themes of scarcity, space and emptiness, which is strongly reflected throughout its unique soundtrack.

The lack of huge musical tracks found throughout the latest Zelda installment underscores the feeling of solitude in the vast openness of an abandoned Hyrule, but it also highlights the serenity that comes with nature.

The “Main Theme” of Breath of the Wild is a composition that quickly tied my emotions to the story of Hyrule, and continued to do so throughout my gameplay experience. It is a beautifully crafted piece that not only emphasizes the feel of adventure, but has been composed with a legion of emotions and tones behind it.

The melody begins with iconic Miyazaki-esque piano notes that seemingly unfold within a matter of seconds, as the ambience of the wild takes over. During this moment, it is hard not to visualize Link leaving the Shrine of Resurrection and being greeted with the captivating landscape of the Great Plateau and beyond.

Like many of the tracks from Breath of the Wild, the “Main Theme” is a composition that sets the mood with a subtle tone, rather than using big sweeping scores like those in previous installments. I, however, have no doubt that this score will certainly create some serious nostalgic vibes in the years to come, just like the effect of the many fan favorites we all know and love today.
