As more information about Age of Calamity gets unpacked from this morning’s 2020 Tokyo Game Show, we now have official mentions of the Divine Beasts from Breath of the Wild confirmed in the English translation of the story trailer. Of course, that’s no surprise coming from a prequel to Breath of the Wild, but it does raise questions as to what the role of the Divine Beasts in Age of Calamity will be.
In Breath of the Wild, the Divine Beasts were essentially reimagined dungeons with a different twist from the classic Zelda format. They were shorter with three-dimensional puzzles and maps and provided a more open-air feel to the atmosphere. Though the Divine Beasts introduced an interesting element to the story, their dungeon mechanics received mixed responses from Zelda players. Hyrule Warriors, however, is a different style of gameplay that incorporates warfare strategy rather than dungeons. Could the Divine Beasts become strongholds to that must be defended, or possibly superpowered mecha-weapons on the battlefield?
Perhaps, but there is no proof of either currently. The Divine Beasts may be little more than topics of character conversation at this point. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Regardless, mowing down hordes of monsters with a mechanical Sheikah tank is still a very entertaining prospect to think about.
