Next year is a big year for the Zelda franchise, as our beloved series is turning 35. In 1986, The Legend of Zelda was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s hard to believe how quick time has passed since then, but the series has evolved over the years into something truly special.
Earlier this year it was rumored that the Super Mario series would be receiving a 35th Anniversary collection. 2020 belongs to the plumber, and 2021 is the year of the green-hatted hero. In preparation for this year’s celebrations for the Mario franchise, Nintendo registered a variety of trademarks for the mustachioed plumber last year.
Mario has indeed been receiving a ton of love this year, with the recently released LEGO sets and, hopefully, an upcoming collection of classic games. Zelda fans will be excited to know that Nintendo has also registered a bunch of trademarks in July for the franchise, as spotted by Twitter user @NaZyrus07.
This list includes a variety of pieces of merchandise, video games, and much more. Considering that Mario is potentially receiving more celebratory events, it makes sense that Zelda could receive similar treatment next year. Yesterday, a listing of Skyward Sword for Nintendo Switch was spotted on Amazon’s UK website. If this leaked Nintendo Switch game comes to fruition, I wouldn’t be surprised to also see some kind of collection containing previous entries in the franchise.
We also have the upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild to look forward to. This might mean that 2021 is definitely going to be a great year for Zelda fans. What would you like to see for the 35th Anniversary of Zelda? I’m personally hoping to see Majora’s Mask in HD, but that’s probably just a pipe dream.
