How playing as both Zelda and Link could work in the Breath of the Wild sequel

Since the release of the trailer for the Breath of the Wild sequel, there has been an abundance of speculation on both Link’s hand and whether or not Zelda will be a playable character. A new video by Commonwealth Realm on YouTube speculates how these mechanics could work if implemented in the game.

New Zelda games typically take away some mechanics to make room for new ones, and we can expect similar things for the sequel. This means that players likely won’t have the Champion’s abilities anymore, as well as the Sheikah Slate runes. Zelda could instead wield the Sheikah Slate to assist Link with puzzles and use her sorcery in combat. Instead of runes, Link might use new magic powers.

Commonwealth Realm also suggests that players might be able to switch between Link and Zelda at will, or even go separate ways. We saw in the memories scenes from Breath of the Wild that while Link and Zelda were often companions, they did separate at times. This would be an interesting way to progress through the story, as players would play as both Link and Zelda but in different settings to experience twice the story and gameplay.
