‘Buy Nintendo’ online searches jump 890% in first 7 weeks of pandemic

Nintendo continues to dominate.

With millions of people under stay-at-home orders, and many of them seeking out new forms of entertainment, the online searches for the phrase “Buy Nintendo” increased by 890% during the first seven weeks of the pandemic, according to MiQ Canada.

Gaming was already widely popular, but it’s experiencing a huge rise in popularity during the COVID-19 outbreak that’s brought much of the world to a halt and forced many to stay home.

Jason Furlano with MiQ Canada told Global News that online searches for gaming consoles, in general, increased during the period they analyzed. However, the numbers show Nintendo products are by far the most sought after. The phrases “Buy Xbox” and “Buy Playstation” grew by 80% and 70% respectively.

It seems Nintendo’s outspending of its competitors in U.S.-based advertisements during the pandemic is paying off.

These upticks in online searches for Nintendo consoles are part of a larger global trend. A smaller, yet similar dominating rise in internet searches was seen during April and May when online shoppers in various Asian countries looking to get their hands on a Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch has been sold out at most major retailers since the pandemic started, but with reports that production is ramping up, people may continue typing “Buy Nintendo” into online search engines in record numbers in hopes of getting their hands on one.
