Nintendo advises players to secure their Switch accounts following reports of unauthorized logins

Many Nintendo Switch owners have been reporting unauthorized logins on their Nintendo accounts. Various reports have indicated that hackers have been using the accounts’ payment details to purchase digital goods on the Nintendo eShop.

This has caused some concern over Nintendo’s handling of user data. One report comes from Twitter User @maridoesathing: ”so I just got a notification from the PayPal app on my phone that I paid 100$ to Nintendo for something. No idea what, because I don’t have a Switch, and haven’t touched my 2DS in a long time. I log into my Nintendo account and see this, someone stole 100 dollars for VBucks.” More stories of a similar nature can be found across Twitter and Reddit, with most login attempts coming from Russia and the US.

Nintendo has been frequently promoting 2-Step Verification on its social media channels. This is a security measure designed to combat against said login attempts.

Prior to this tweet, Nintendo issued a warning to Japanese Switch owners as reports of credit card fraud have been increasing steadily. Nintendo has since offered a statement to VGC, informing them that it is well aware of the ongoing issues.

“We are aware of reports of unauthorized access to some Nintendo Accounts and we are investigating the situation,” the statement reads. “In the meantime, we recommend that users enable two-step verification for their Nintendo Account as instructed here.”

To ensure maximum security and safety for your Nintendo account, it is recommended that you set up 2-Step Verification for your Nintendo Switch. You can learn how to do so on Nintendo’s website.
