Zelda Universe goes to Ichibancon

Ichibancon captures the best elements of both large and small conventions. It’s big enough to draw in popular celebrity guests, and has one of the most organized con staffs I’ve ever experienced. At the same time, it still feels like a community.

Nintendo cosplayers were spotted throughout the convention, including a few Zelda characters. At one point, a fire alarm went off, which made for the perfect opportunity to check out all the cosplays since we all had to go outside to evacuate. I do wish I could have seen the firefighters’ faces when they drove up to find a bunch of nerds swarming the grass around the hotel. Fortunately, it was a false alarm.

My Zelda Universe teammates and I hosted the panel “A Musical History of Zelda“. We were so thankful to not only be in one of the biggest rooms but to also have such a great audience turnout. Ichibancon clearly attracts Zelda fans who know their stuff — no one had any trouble answering our trivia questions, and they weren’t easy! Speaking of trivia, we really enjoyed attending “Gameshow Impossibru: Tame That Game Tune!” from The Manly Battleships. I’m proud to say I won some candy for recognizing the Zelda II “Palace Theme.”

Artist Alley had some nice Zelda finds. I picked up a new Link and Sidon print to add to my collection. The artwork is from Reddachi who also sells ultra kawaii Zelda and Pokemon pins.

Paprika Studios had a shop in the artist alley with gaming and anime charms, pillows, and cups. Inspired by the Breath of the Wild 2 trailer were “Rehydrated Ganon” and shorthaired Zelda charms.

I really appreciate Ichibancon’s recognition of invisible illnesses. Having an invisible illness myself, it’s frustrating when you look perfectly healthy but feel like you’re about to pass out.

And finally, I leave you with one of the greatest sights from the convention: Our own Cody Davies and Dan VanHiel getting eaten by a giant Mudkip.
