Yuga’s Art Gallery: The Zelda cosplayers of NYCC 2019

My favorite con of the year, New York Comic Con, has come and gone once again. As long as I wish it would have lasted forever, I will always have the memories of this amazing convention. My favorite part of any con is taking photos of the amazing cosplayers that attend the convention, and just as always, the Legend of Zelda cosplayers that attended are no exception. Here are some of the fantastic cosplays I came across throughout my journey of New York Comic Con 2019!

These cosplayers are all wonderfully dressed, whether they’re sporting store-bought or handmade, all year projects or last-minute ideas; these people put a lot of effort into their craft and I would like for them to get the credit and respect that they are due.

As I’m sure most people are also aware, this is a large convention and while I would have loved to have gotten a photo of every Zelda cosplayer that had attended, a single person in a sea of people can only do so much. However, if anyone has any cosplays they sported at the con and was not included or a cosplayer was not properly credited, please feel free to leave them in the comments! It is a priority of mine to make sure everyone is included and given their due credit for the incredible talent that is listed here today!

Link

My first run in with a Legend of Zelda cosplayer on Thursday was RagDoll618 with a cute, feminine take on our Hylian hero. Of course, seeing Link is always a highlight, but I love it when people put their own, unique spin on such a classic character. It shows a lot of creativity and the wearers personality when they do this and this cosplayer does just that!

Link with Guardian Gear; Breath of the Wild

I saw this cosplay from across the room with its glowing gizmos and gadgets and I was instantly impressed! Noah H. worked on these pieces with some friends on Etsy and the results are truly impressive! I only wish my camera did his costume more justice with all the work put into it, but I am so happy to have seen it in person!

Princess Zelda; Breath of the Wild

You always see the photos of people wearing this cosplay online but I haven’t seen a cosplayer in this beautiful gown in person until that Friday of the convention. I didn’t get a chance to ask if she hand crafted this cosplay or purchased it through commission, but one thing is for certain and it’s that she certainly does justice to Princess Zelda’s regality.

Hylian Tunic Link; Breath of the Wild

In a sea of blue Champion tunics, this cosplayer caught my eye with a red Hylian tunic. As I’ve mentioned and will probably mention again, I love the alternative Link costumes. As fantastic as the classic green or Champions blue is, cosplays like these show that these gamers play to the march of their own beat. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who prefers to prance around Hyrule in this tunic rather than the Champions.

Link; Breath of the Wild

There are always a lot of Breath of the Wild cosplayers, but what stood out to me about DrSteggy’s, in particular, was the inclusion of the diamond circlet. It may seem like a small detail, but for someone who used it so much in Breath of the Wild, it was really cool to see in person. Of course, the rest of the cosplay is wonderful as well, and DrSteggy definitely got in the spirit!

Princess Zelda

I love how this cosplay draws inspiration from all different incarnations of the Princess. Zeriatalia has taken inspiration from both that as well as the artist, Hannah_Alexander_Artwork. It’s so cool to see a cosplayer bring an artist’s vision to life as well as putting their own unique spin to it. Very beautifully done and it was a pleasure to see in person!

Riju; Breath of the Wild

Riju has always been a favorite of mine as well as many fans and it’s awesome to see her portrayed in cosplay! Bakuh03 did a fantastic job of bringing the character to life and has Riju’s smirk down perfectly! The entire cosplay is beautiful, but to me, the headpiece stands out as the most impressive piece and it is amazingly crafted!

Zelda; Skyward Sword

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Skyward Sword cosplay with Breath of the Wild’s peak in popularity, so I was excited to see this lovely cosplayer on the convention floor! We had the chance to talk a bit and found that she altered this dress and hand crafted many of the pieces. It’s always impressive to see people transform your everyday clothes into amazing costumes!

Royal Guard Link; Breath of the Wild

Yes, that’s me: I’ve managed to sneak my way into another one of my cosplay articles. At one point I wasn’t sure if I was going to get this done in time as I had started making this two weeks before the convention (don’t follow my example, kids, con crunch is real,) but I’m so happy that I was able to get it con ready. As tradition, I go as Link at least one day of the convention, and this year I thought I’d take a more regal approach. If I’m going to be a representative for Zelda Universe I may as well look like one.

Link and Zelda; Breath of the Wild

Cosplaying with a friend is always a joy and Link and Zelda are a great pick of characters! Cosplaywithtlc and her companion were ready and eager when I asked for a photo, and it was a pleasure to chat with them for a short time after. I particularly like that the Cosplaywithtlc has chosen Zelda’s white garbs, which look absolutely lovely! These two make a great team!

Tingle; Majora’s Mask

Tingle’s not a character you run into at conventions too often, so once I saw Maddiesawyer pass me by I had to grab a photo. I was able to see the red balloon stand out amongst the crowd and followed that for this fantastic photo. Not only does the costume look spot on, but she has definitely embraced the character which makes it all the more better.

Link

This is not just your ordinary Link cosplay. This is an entirely knitted and crocheted Link cosplay, which is incredibly impressive! AlexisCrafting specializes in these sorts of costumes and also made one of Princess Zelda to wear the day prior (though sadly I did not get to see it for myself.) I tried knitting in my younger days and all I remember is never being able to keep a scarf the same width the whole way through, so I can’t even comprehend the hard work and dedication it must have taken to make these costumes!

Princess Zelda; Twilight Princess

Mandycake is a cosplayer I have been following online for a while now, and the first cosplay I saw of hers was this one here. It was wonderful to see her wearing it again in person and it’s definitely been an inspiration to me seeing how much work and effort has been put into it. I do want to make Zelda’s Twilight Princess gown for myself one of these days and I can only hope it will be as spot on as Mandycake’s!

Royal Armor Link; Twilight Princess

Last year I featured Meme.King.Cosplays who was then dressed as Princess Zelda from A Link Between Worlds. Since then I’ve been following her incredible work and my favorite so far is definitely this royal armor. Not only is it one of my favorite alternate costumes for Link, but it’s a real testament to the cosplayers skills! To see it in person was truly a pleasure; the details and craftsmanship are incredible!

Skull Kid; Majora’s Mask

Skull Kid on its own is an impressive cosplay to pull off, but BackAlleyCosplay went above and beyond and created a moon to follow ominously as he traveled the convention floor. It was very easy to spot in the crowd, so it was that much easier to track him down for a photo. This is BackAlleyCosplays first cosplay (even more impressive) and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for the future!

Sheik and Zelda; Twilight Princess/Smash Bros

TheGorillaSage and FrostedLightning cosplayed Sheik and Zelda respectively and look fantastic! There was so much going on after I stopped them for a photo — me trying to get their social media for this article, people asking my friends and I for our photos, people asking for their photos — I don’t know if I got the proper chance to really tell these two how much I loved their cosplays, but I really do. Two sides of the same person wonderfully portrayed by these superb cosplayers!

With that, those were all the Zelda cosplayers I was able to track down. Of course I saw others passing by that I would have loved to have gotten photos of if there were no human traffic jams preventing me, but hey, that’s Comic Con for you. I had a wonderful time being part of the cosplay experience once again and I already look forward to next years convention! In the mean time, I’ll be thinking about which Link variant I’ll want to cosplay way in advance this time.

BONUS: Vacation Link; Breath of the Wild

When asked “What made you think of this idea?” by the judges, Ace.tronaut simply responded “I just thought ‘that boy needs a vacation.”

Okay, this one isn’t New York Comic Con, but I had to share it from a previous con. Ace.tronaut is a cosplayer I met at a local gaming convention who I did see again at NYCC (dressed in an awesome Breath of the Wild Link cosplay, I might add,) which is what reminded me to add this fabulous idea to this little lineup. Link on vacation was a great enough idea that it won “Most Original Cosplay” at the cosplay contest we both entered at the con and it 100% deserves it! Ace.tronaut comes up with the best out-of-the-box cosplay ideas and it was absolutely worth sharing as an extra!
